Eucomis

("Pineapple lily / Pineapple flower")

Origins:

From the mountaineous areas of South Africa. The name Eucomis comes from Greek: 'eu' meaning 'pleasing' and 'kome' meaning 'hair of the head' thus referring to the tuft of leaf-like bracts that crown the flower.

Planting Tips:

Wait until the soil has warmed up before planting and do not plant Eucomis too deep, the tips of the bulbs should be just below the soil surface. Water well and regularly during the growing season (don't let them dry out) but ease off towards the middle of the Summer. Don't let the exotic looks fool you, Eucomis are very easy to grow. Just make sure they receive enough sunlight: too much shade will reduce flowering. When planting in pots or containers make sure they are deep enough (and of course have drainage holes): the roots need room to grow.
